How to Enjoy Calculus Eli S. Pine

Today We just want to enjoy calculus again, not have it be another same ole slog. I say this as a former mathematician and someone who really enjoyed learning calculus. And sometimes I have bad experiences and don't enjoy the taste. Because when I went to college the first time, I did not enjoy calculus. And as I went on, I didn't like algebra II, or analytical geometry, or calculus, either. If I told my Calculus teacher that Calculus was my favorite class, she would be shocked. To see why this is useful, think of how much cable you would need to hang a suspension bridge. For example, a four year old child wouldn't be expected to be proficient in calculus. In fact I hated, hated, hated it. At four we are learning basic It's a journey, a learning process and a fun challenge to be enjoyed, not endured. It's possible I won't be that satisfied by my Taco Bell. Sometimes there's a long line at the drive-thru. But I realize that just because I loved calculus, doesn't mean that it's important for everyone to learn it. I just look like a generalist because my path happens to cross many boundaries that are meaningful to others, but not to me. For twenty years I believed that I hated calculus. So I need to correct my calculus by factoring in probability. I just took all those courses because I thought that's what you were supposed to do in school. Calculus meant you were going to graduate school for something, like physics. Calculus was a college thing, and not even first-year course. Especially Calc II, the class I'm now taking again. My intended audience here is others who are about to teach Calculus at Michigan, or people who are wondering what it would be like to set up a Michigan-style program in their own departments.
