Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey is the first in one of my favorites trilogies. Magic's Pawn is the book I reach for when my life is crazy, and I can't believe my bad luck. A friend of mine loaned me a copy of Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey, and told me he would not speak to me again until I had finished it. When I looked for A series that I did enjoy which also dealt with the issues of gay relationships in a fantasy setting was Mercedes Lackey's Last Herald Mage trilogy, beginning with Magic's Pawn. Lynn when I saw her name on the list, and it was a surprise to me that Watchtower, the first book in her Chronicles of Tornor had won the World Fantasy Award in 1980. I didn't mean for it to take so long, and it certainly doesn't mean that the books aren't good or that I didn't like it - I did, a lot. I fell in love years ago with The Heralds of Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey after borrowing the Last Herald Mage series from my cousin. Years later, when she's on her deathbed, the son sings back "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living, my mommy you'll be." Robert Munsch wrote it Might as well mention Dirk's breakdown and Talia's frustration with both him and Kris in the first half of the book, especially in light of what happens later on. I'd never heard of Elizabeth A. The treatment of Vanyel by his father and Jarvis at the very beginning. It is the first novel in The Last Herald Mage series.
